In John 12, Jesus describes his followers like a seed that must fall to the ground to die in order to bear fruit. That can feel like an extreme picture. But in nature the seed actually takes deep root and then multiplies as it grows. Discipleship to Jesus does require us to live sacrificially, with a heart for others.
